The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. buried Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae under ashes. The rediscovery of Herculaneum in 1738 by Roque Joaquin de Alcubierre initiated excavations at Pompeii, financed by Charles VII of Naples. Since 1748, Pompeii has been gradually unearthed, revealing Roman life to millions of visitors.
The site has fascinated scholars, researchers and tourists, inspiring numerous literary works. Rubén Montoya combines research in archives in Rome with visits to the site to tell the story of Pompeii from its founding to the current excavations.
